Semaglutide works by acting on receptors in the brain that control your appetite, causing you to feel fuller much easier. This may help you eat less food and decrease your body weight. Weight loss commonly starts within 2 weeks and continues for 9 to 12 months on semaglutide treatment.

We advise exactly how, when and how much Ozempic / Wegovy to take and you should follow their directions as closely as possible. As a rough guide, you’ll usually start by taking a lower dose of the medication, then gradually build up to the maximum tolerated dose of your course. Generally, you’ll start by injecting 0.25mg just once a week for 4 weeks, then increase to a stronger dose each week until you’re taking the maintenance dose of 2.4mg, still just once a week. The injection pen comes preloaded with the medication for very easy administration.

Around a third of individuals who take Ozempic/Wegovy will achieve 10% or greater weight loss. As a minimum, with proper use, 5% or more weight loss is expected for the majority of users.

The clinical studies show that those with appropriate support from their healthcare provider achieve the best results.

The actions of skinny pen medication are best thought of as a "chemical gastric band", albeit without surgery and readily reversible by just stopping the injections. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, depression and low blood sugar symptoms can occur. Rarer are dizziness, allergic reactions, inflammation of the gallbladder and pancreas. It is not suitable for use by pregnant or breastfeeding persons and is not prescribable if there is a history of thyroid cancer.

The Wegovy brand of semaglutide has a UK licence for weight loss but Ozempic is currently only available off-label.
